Shake, Rattle and Roll: The Birth of Rock and Roll Music

Billboard magazine – and their accompanying music charts—have been the defining music industry trade magazine since 1894. Any musician who believes they have made look at the Billboard charts for recognition in the music business. Of the top ten albums on the Billboard Rock Albums chart as of August 2012, we see bands like Pierce the Veil, Linkin Park, HellYeah, The Lumineers, Shinedown, fun., Tremonti, Baroness, Gotye, and Of Monsters and Men. None of these artists are or contain African American members, which shows a huge gap between the birth of rock and roll in the 1950s to today. When…

Top 10 Albums That Inspired Me

This was a meme a while back. These are the albums that had an impact on and/or influenced me over the years. I kind of wanted to build on why I chose them as the original meme didn't allow you to explain yourself. Unforgettable with Love I've written in the past about how much this album means to me. I love this album so much. It's a part of the very fiber of my being. No Strings Attached I'm not going to lie. *NSYNC literally saved my life. I was in a very dark place when "I Want You Back"…

The Song Diaries by Sophie Ellis-Bextor

Of all the pop girls that I've listened to from the U.K., she has consistently put out high-quality music since she went solo from her band, theaudience, in 2001. Hit after hit. My favorite song of hers is If You Go from the "Trip the Light Fantastic" album. It's sonic perfection. There isn't anything that she's put on her albums - and I'm talking deep cuts like Let's Get Physical - that haven't found a space in the jukebox of my heart. That's how much I love her. Just as I was going through serious withdrawal after the release…

The Year of Living Dangerously

2012 was a very strange year for me. I had high hopes, but there were several events that made it a very trying year for me. Stars in Concert

Stars in Concert (Boulevard Theater)

Vegas is never short on entertainment. We boast some of the most diverse types of entertainment: musicals, Cirque du Soleil, magic, and so forth. One that sticks out to me is impersonator shows, or even shows co-opt another style, like Human Nature or Rock of Ages. My friend and her husband invited me to a show at the Boulevard Theater called Stars in Concert. It was an impersonator show. They featured Elton John, Dolly Parton, Michael Jackson, Elvis, and a send-up of the Blues Brothers. I thought their Michael Jackson could've done better vocally (and makeup-wise), but altogether not too…

The Long and Winding Road: A Global Wanderlust Mix

When I built this mixtape, I challenged my followers on Twitter to inspire it. We agreed on the theme of traveling and wanderlust. Enjoy! it's a small world For obvious reasons, this is the best opener for a mixtape about global wanderlust. We become cynical about the themes as soon as it invades our ears. The idea behind is archaic and dated. But the spirit of the song will always ring true, from 8 months to 108 years. Besides Kris told me to open the mix with it lol. We Gotta Get Out of This Place - The Animals "Now…
