Embracing Your Creative Nemesis

I'm not a devout follower of New Age thinking. I'm a cradle Catholic, but I have a hard time believing that God doesn't give us the tools to explore other ways of thinking. For example, my Ma always had Buddhist and pagan symbols in the house while insisting we go through baptism, first communion, and confirmation. She always said if one doesn't protect her, one of the other ones will. My friends growing up were practicing Wiccans at one point. I have crystals and practice meditation. I resolutely walk the fine line of spirituality though firmly grounded in my faith.…

My Favorite Movies for Every Year I’ve Been Alive

There's a meme (don't you love them?) asking people to choose their favorite movies from every year they were born. I decided to get in on the action. You can too. This list was a test of conviction for me. 1985 and 1987, as well as 1997-2001 (coincidentally, my high school years), were the most difficult, only because they had some excellent flicks. 2011 was impossible. I couldn't find anything I liked. I had to go back through the list a few times before I found my choice. Click on the titles to purchase or rent on Amazon. '83: The…

Made-ups (particularly Melody) are mine and mine alone. His kisses were hungry, pure, and - above all - honest. Melody Masterson couldn't imagine anywhere but being in Draco Malfoy's arms at the moment. The thing was they weren't officially a couple, in the normal sense. They had joined that new vibe of unattached couples. That was the new hip thing, her Muggle friend Natasha had told Melody in her last letter. Melody knew it was…

Nils Peterson at the Willow Glen Library, December 2016

I had the pleasure of seeing former Santa Clara County poet laureate Nils Peterson at the Willow Glen library in December 2016. I enjoyed his overall style, compared to other poetry readings I’ve been to because he repeated himself. He would recite a poem or a thought and repeat it if we didn’t hear him for the first time. Then, after he would do that, he would take it one step further and comment on it as a dialogue between speaker and attendee. It helped the audience comprehend what he was saying. To me, that was a fun and engaging…

Prompt: Holding repetition

Haruki Murakami When I'm in writing mode for a novel, I get up at 4:00 am and work for five to six hours. In the afternoon, I run for 10km or swim for 1500m (or do both), then I read a bit and listen to some music. I go to bed at 9:00 pm. I keep to this routine every day without variation. The repetition itself becomes an important thing; it's a form of mesmerism. I mesmerize myself to reach a deeper state of mind. But to hold to such repetition for so long - six months to a year…

15 Tips on How to Feel Safe in Your Own Home

I've had this in my files for ages, and it's time to share it with you. I hope you enjoy it! Buy this book on Bookshop.org and support indie bookstores! One of my favorite books is "The Gift of Fear" by Gavin de Becker. It's a deep dive into people who did not trust their instinct and unknowingly put themselves in danger. It got me thinking about what I've done with my own life and how anyone - whether you're a single woman living on her own for the first time or you have a growing family - could make…

On Keeping a Private Journal

Writing has always been a therapeutic endeavor for me. I turned to poetry when I had no other voice. However, I quickly realized that my will to live was intertwined with the art of writing when I channeled my teenage rage and post-adolescent hangups on paper. I graduated from poetry eventually to major in English at the college level, writing short stories, creating modern-day fairy tales, participating in virtual television shows, scholarly essays, maintaining my blog, and the like. "The preservation of our scattered thoughts is to be considered an object but of minor importance."Henry David ThoreauTweet To preserve these…
