Tuneful Tuesdays are my weekly song recommendations of the moment. But don’t expect the latest, hottest thing. A lot of it will be classics and throwbacks from the extensive jukebox in my head.
Today’s track is “Better Than Today” by Kylie, from her eleventh studio album, Aphrodite.
I’m a little shocked the Aphrodite era didn’t land as well as it should have. I felt like there was a great big push for “All the Lovers” (to me, it sounded like the Killers’ “Human”, an apt description because Stuart Price produced both songs). The rest of the singles from Aphrodite sputtered and died on impact. I went back and read the press from that era, and even Kylie feels let down. Aphrodite is a solid pop record.
When I first heard “Better Than Today,” I heard a tune. It’s the perfect pick-me-up song. No one else in the world could pull off cheerful advice like “what’s the point of living if you don’t wanna dance?” It shuffled up in my car when I was feeling particularly low the other day, and it lifted my spirit.
The video’s colour palette (see above) could’ve used some lightening up, to match the bounce of the song. Oh well.
A tune is a tune is a tune.
