We Gotta Get Out of This Place: A Soundtrack to the Vietnam War

In my Senior Seminar for History in 2010, I titled my final paper “We Gotta Get out of This Place: Historical Interpretations of Famous Vietnam War Era Photographs.” Instead of getting started on my first draft, I spent an hour or so compiling these songs, lol. I had writer’s block, for one thing, and music always makes things better for me.

The delay worked because I put this mixtape on and boom! I managed to bang out six v. good pages. Right away. It just put me in the mood of Vietnam and helped me focus. I love my topic. Plus I’m sharing this mixtape with anyone who wants it. Besides, if I’ve got 10 pages, the last 10 should be a breeze. I just need to get in there and argue the crap out of it, lol.

Just so you know, most of the songs aren’t necessarily protest music. But they are definitely songs from the actual era, songs the boys would have listened to on Armed Forces Radio. Or songs they would have listened to on their record players, like my dad. My dad did two tours in Vietnam before he married my mom, and he told me life would have been so much easier if they had iPods, lol. When they had free time, he would sit in a corner and listen to his records.
